- Select the Project Folder:
- In Designer Navigator, locate the Mappings node under the folder of the project where you want to create the new mapping.
- Create New Mapping:
- Right-click on the Mappings node and select New Mapping.
- The New Mapping dialog box will appear.
- Configure the New Mapping:
- In the New Mapping dialog, enter a Name for the mapping.
- Optionally, you can also add a Description to provide more context about the mapping.
- If you want to create a new empty dataset, select the Create Empty Dataset checkbox. This option is optional.
- Click OK to proceed.
- Understand the Dataset Option:
- Datasets are optional and can be added or removed after the mapping is created.
- You can create all data flows using other components in the Mapping Editor, even without a dataset.
- In ODI 12c, Datasets offer the option to create data flows using the entity relationship method, which is more familiar to users of earlier ODI versions. It may be faster for certain scenarios.
- When a physical diagram is generated based on a logical diagram containing a Dataset, ODI automatically converts the entity relationships into a flow diagram and merges it with the existing flow. You do not need to worry about how the connections are made.
- New Mapping Opens in the Main Pane:
- After clicking OK, your new mapping will open in a new tab in the main pane of ODI Studio.
- Open Datastore, Reusable Mapping, or Dataset:
- If you want to view or edit the editor of a datastore, reusable mapping, or dataset used in the mapping, right-click the object in the Mapping tab and select Open to view it.
Additional Tip:
- You can add or remove datasets after the mapping is created, and datasets are not mandatory for designing a mapping. You can accomplish the same behavior using other components in the mapping editor.
